Q: The other night, I went on a first date with this girl I met at an art opening. We had dinner and multiple drinks, and by the end of the night, she had bedroom eyes. I graciously passed up the opportunity because I didn’t want her to regret it the next morning when she sobered up. Now, she won’t return my calls. I was just trying to be a gentleman. What gives?
A: Excellent, unusual question. Most guys would’ve been ready to go at dinner, forget the drinks and bedroom eyes. This is very Aidan of “Sex and the City” of you (not that we ever watched that show, mind you).
We would say the overriding emotion for her is sheer embarrassment when she did sober up the next day and realized her advances were declined (even if it was for purely chivalrous reasons).
We suggest one more overture to clear the air: Send some flowers to her work with a note requesting a lunch or dinner date. The effort and expense that requires should send her the message that you’re totally serious and don’t hold her horny inebriation against her. If she doesn’t get back to you after that, then YOU should get a message loud and clear: She only wanted you for sex! Gasp! A woman only wanting a man for sex?? Unheard of! So you missed out on it; move on.
