If you watched some of the HBO reality series “Cathouse,” then you might recognize Brooke Taylor's pixyish face or slender figure.
Taylor is a top prostitute at the Moonlite BunnyRanch, a legal brothel in Nevada. The 28-year-old may not fit the stereotypical image of a working girl. She's only been in the business for 31/2 years, all of them at the BunnyRanch. Taylor said she has never worked as a stripper and couldn't have told anyone what a brothel really was before she got hooked on watching “Cathouse.”
Before becoming a sex worker, Taylor graduated from Western Illinois University with a degree in music therapy and went on to become a case manager for adults with developmental disabilities. But the potential profits and the excitement of working at the BunnyRanch called to her. Lately, she's been spending two weeks out of each month servicing customers at the ranch and making as much as $100,000 per customer.
Taylor spoke with 210SA about an average day at the BunnyRanch, how the recession is impacting the sex industry and her relationship status.
How did you get into the profession?
Well, I had graduated from college, and I was working as a case manager for adults with developmental disabilities. I used to watch documentaries, and “Cathouse” on HBO was originally listed as a documentary. So that's how I found out about the business, and from there, it was a year of debating it within myself and then checking it out and getting more information. I flew out and visited, came back and put my two weeks' notice in at my regular job.
What about the lifestyle of the girls portrayed in “Cathouse” made you want to make the switch?
It was really interesting to me that the girls were normal. The day before I started watching the show, if somebody had asked me what a brothel was, I wouldn't have had a clue. I found it fascinating that these people who I thought would be completely different than I was as a person, I could relate to them. And also, I was living paycheck to paycheck. So, this was an opportunity at a very young age to set my own pay and set my own schedule and take control of my situation.
What is the price range for your services?
It really depends on what (BunnyRanch visitors) want to do. If they just want to sit down and have a chat with me, that's obviously going to be cheaper than if they want an overnight with me. You can really spend anywhere between a few hundred dollars to $100,000. A few hundred doesn't get you much. It doesn't really get you any contact with me.
How much time did you spend with the client who paid you $100,000?
He was here for five days.
So, what's an average day on the BunnyRanch?
There's no average day at the BunnyRanch. ... I'm a morning person. That's another misconception, that we're all night owls. I can't stay up late to save my life. I usually get up when the sun comes up. I'll answer my e-mails, check and see if I have any appointments coming in that day. I'll get ready for the day, and if I don't have an appointment at that time or one later on, it's a whole lot of waiting. You wait for the bell to ring when a customer comes in, and you go down and line up. And if they choose you, you have a good time.
