A group of San Antonians are willing to do their part to help set a new world record, even if it means baring it all.
Some of the Alamo City's own will put on their best birthday suits in an effort to help the American Association for Nude Recreation set a record for most simultaneous skinny-dippers.
And what better time for nudists to achieve the feat than at the end of Nude Recreation Week, which runs July 5-11.
“The Guinness World Records organization has just created a new category for the largest number of people simultaneously skinny-dipping, and the (AANR) is the contract association for this record-setting event,” according to the national nude recreation group's Web site.
The AANR World Record Skinny-Dip across North America will take place at more than 100 “participating clubs and legally sanctioned nude beaches” across the U.S. at 2 p.m. on July 11.
Among them will be San Antonio's own Bexar Recreation Society.
“We'll have a potluck, and it'll be people just enjoying being in the sun or air conditioning with some swimming of course,” said Harvey Kendall, co-chairman of the BRS, who will host the event at his house.
According to the AANR's Web site, those willing to lend a hand, and other parts, must be fully nude when the actual counting begins at 2 p.m.
“As with all Guinness World Records events, all record attempts will be ‘witnessed' by a designated ‘member in standing' of the local community,” the AANR press release states.
Kendall, a retired professor who joined BRS in 1994, said he expects about 25 people, but encourages newcomers to attend if they e-mail in advance.
People don't have to be a BRS member to take part in the festivity, as anyone can attend a get-together once without joining.
Though the organization asks that you have had at least some prior nude recreation experience, it is not required.
“People want to do it but think they don't have the body for it,” said Kendall, who has been a nudist all his life. “I say just give it a try, and within 15 minutes you'll feel comfortable. This group is a very congenial group.”
BRS stresses that the association is about nudism, not swinging.
The San Antonio organization, which has 60 members ages 20 and older, meets once to twice a month and consists of people from all walks of life, from doctors to ditch diggers.
“There's something about taking your clothes off that opens your mind,” Kendall said. “Inhibitions are broken down. You feel freer to almost talk about anything.”
