Fashion knows no size limits for local designer DeAnna Hodges. Hodges will showcase her Deeva plus-size line of clothing at the Curves in Color show at Bubblehead on Saturday, Oct. 3. This show is getting a jump on the trends just before the inaugural Fashion Week SA 2009 begins Monday, Oct. 5. Men’s clothing by Fathers N Sons Fashion will also be featured.
Hodges, 25, was inspired to sew by her grandmother and later earned a bachelor’s degree in fashion design at Texas Woman’s University. Hodges began her Deeva line earlier this year and was happy to chat about her creations.
What was it about this year that made you want to get going on the Deeva line?
I was working retail, and I ended up going to the (presidential inauguration) in January. And I had been talking about it (creating a fashion line) on and off. ... When I went to the inaugural, just being around all those positive people that were set to do different stuff, I was just like, “I have to start my own business.” I was very much inspired. That kind of gave me the motivation and the push.
Why design clothing for plus-size women?
I’m a plus-size woman myself. So are just about all the women in my family. They’re plus size or they’re very curvy. So it’s very difficult to find clothes, even for myself. I always have to style it out or reconstruct it in some type of way. I just really wanted to always have that line of clothes that women could go to that, you know, fit a real woman. Coming from a design aspect, I can see visually, as far as patterns, the small changes they could make in the patterns that would fit a woman so much better. There was no way I could start a line and not actually make clothes for real women.
What will we see at the show on Saturday?
This fashion show, it is a little ’70s retro with modern touches. I still consider it sportswear, but here lately, jeans is kind of like the norm, so I’ve been told my stuff is a little dressier than casual. But for me, it’s very casual. I love to wear dresses and stuff like that. ... Some cocktail dresses. I love making dresses. I feature some capris and pants but I mostly make dresses. With a dress you can dress it up, dress it down. Nowadays, people put on leggings. You can just have a dress even with sandals. ... I’m such a tomboy too, but I really love dresses. It automatically says feminine.
What are some fashion tips for plus-size ladies to keep in mind?
I’m really big on proportion. A lot of customers that I have or just friends that I have, proportions of things can be off in the market. A lot of women figure plus-size is just big. My mom’s plus size and I’m plus size, and our proportions are different. ... I really try to create a waistline. That’s something that’s featured through all my stuff, whether it be with belts or built into the dresses.
You’ll be showing off a 2010 spring/summer collection at Bubblehead, but are there some fall trends people in San Antonio can pick up now that would transition well into spring?
It really helps with us being in San Antonio because we don’t really have all the seasons. So we’re pretty much stuck on spring/summer. But a lot of stuff that will carry over in my line are, like, the colors (plums, blues, oranges and reds). I love to be colorful all year round. And there are certain tops in my line, if you purchase something for the spring or summer, you can actually wear it now.
