The Magnolia Pancake Haus has been a centerpiece of breakfast in San Antonio for nine years and counting, and there is no question why. Founded on the recipe for the “World's Best Buttermilk Pancake” and a passion for good service, Magnolia remains in the top ranks for breakfast-food dining. A mingling of American and German cooking creates a taste like no other and provokes a loyalty among breakfast-loving patrons, who sometimes have to wait outside a good while to get a table.
WHAT: The Magnolia Pancake Haus
WHERE: 606 Embassy Oak, Suite 100;
(210) 496-0828, www.magnoliapancakehaus.com
HOURS: 7 a.m.-2 p.m. seven days a week
TASTE SENSATION: The abundant menu features breakfast favorites from French toast to omelets to fruit, but our favorite is the Munchener Apfel Pfannekuchen (pronounced FAN-e-koo-chen). The Pfannekuchen is a puffy Bavarian pancake filled with apples blended with cinnamon, served with fresh whipped cream and powdered sugar. If you're in the mood for a meatier option, the Stonewall Ranch Breakfast is unbeatable: two homemade biscuits served with the most superb sausage gravy we've tasted yet, two eggs and your choice of breakfast meat.
TUMS-WORTHY: A place as good as Magnolia Pancake Haus comes with a lot of business, so beware of weekend table waits. Abundant seating is available (Magnolia relocated to a larger space in 2006), but the food is so good everyone wants a bite! Making the trip on a weekday morning dissipated the wait for us, but if you have to go on the weekend, no worries, their outside waiting area is fan-cooled and surrounded by beautiful flowers.
THE 210 TAKE: A classic San Antonio favorite, the Magnolia Pancake Haus continues to serve up delicious breakfast every time we visit. Servers will pour you a cup of fresh coffee when you arrive and leave the pot to you and your discretion. Everything on the menu is excellent, the service is fast and friendly and the atmosphere is comfy and clean.
