THE BAND: Fareview THE MEMBERS: Adrian Flores, vocals; Colby Edwards, guitar; Marc Trevino, bass; Nikolas R. Carlson, keys, piano; Ray Cavazos, drums.
THE SOUND: It’s hard to avoid bunching them up with the emo explosion earlier this decade, with bands such as Thursday, Taking Back Sunday or Yellowcard. But emo’s not the genre to place Fareview in. Riffy guitars and a heavy rhythm section lean them toward the heavier side. “We’ve had people say that they can’t put a particular band or artist to us,” Carlson said. Although they’ve heard some attempts, like early Used and Yellowcard. “Incubus on speed,” Edwards said. After deciding they were ready to invest some money into their music, they recorded Sails for the Shipwrecked, their first EP, in February at 5th Street Studios in Austin. THE BACKGROUND: The current Fareview lineup, which has been playing for a little over a year, isn’t close to the original one. “I think it’s a really fateful thing that we’re all working together,” Edwards said. They communicate well as a band, and it’s the friendship between them that makes that possible, he said. Carlson and Edwards, both 22, went to Roosevelt High School, and the others went to O’Connor. Cavazos, 20, is a music major at UTSA; Flores, 24, also goes to UTSA and is majoring in engineering; and Trevino, 21, is a communications major at the University of the Incarnate Word. Edwards is attending Northeast Lakeview College and working toward a degree in microbiology, and Carlson is returning to school at San Antonio College to learn graphic design. But Fareview still ranks high on their list of priorities, and they are happy with recent successes like the EP, as well as getting the chance to open for Anberlin and Straylight Run on Oct. 3 at the White Rabbit.
