The hair might be shorter and the makeup, for the most part, gone (in some cases, the hair, too).
The South Texas Rockfest takes place July 11-13 at the Javelina Harley Davidson grounds in West Boerne, and it’ll be a 21st century version of a 1980s Woodstock. Glam rock ’n’ roll and old-fashioned pop metal with the occasional power ballad thrown in will rule the weekend as a slew of ’80s metal bands hit the stage. For the mid-30s and older crowd, it will spark memories of MTV and those occasions you and your honey made your own personal electric-guitar music in the grass/car/theater. For the young ’uns, it’s a chance to see what a great era you missed by being born later than most folks who will be at the show — and an opportunity to blame your parents for it. But fear not. 210SA has provided an all-encompassing quiz on a few of the Rockfest bands. Break out your No. 2 pencils (it’s an ’80s quiz, remember? Some of us grew up without computers!), and compare your scores with the points system at the end. Five points for correct answers to the first part of each question; three additional points for the extra credit. Don’t forget your lighters. 1) There are two versions of this band with the All-American name, though the original singer is British. Extra credit: The ‘British’ version played at Jack’s Patio Bar in February. Name the singer.
Extra credit: Which 1987 movie soundtrack did they contribute to? 3) This group has played the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, Majestic Theatre and Sunken Garden Theater in the past three years. Extra credit: They ended their Sunken Garden show by committing heavy metal sacrilege — concluding their set list with a ballad. Name the song. 4) Which band shares an album title with a song off Bon Jovi’s 1986 release “Slippery When Wet”? 5) This band named itself after a man often regarded as the father of physics and America’s greatest electrical engineer. Extra credit: Headlining the Rockfest on Saturday, July 12, these guys are scheduled to release a live concert DVD on Tuesday, July 15. What’s it called? 6) This artist was the lead singer of a band once managed by the nephew of late actor/comedian Milton Berle. The elder Berle even appeared in drag in the video for their biggest hit. Extra credit: Name that big hit, as well as the other band this artist formed with the drummer from Cinderella in the early 1990s. 7) This group, which has also played Jack’s Patio Bar, never claimed to be a ‘one-woman guy.’ 8) This group’s name conjures images of the past and present. Extra credit: Their performance at the South Texas Rockfest comes at a perfect time, considering their biggest hit is what? 9) This band played an impromptu 1992 concert in front of a K-Mart in its home state of Georgia as a statement to the chain, which refused to sell its records. Extra credit: The band’s most famous song involves a solo with a chainsaw. Name the song. 10) This band’s name is not to be confused with a submarine sandwich chain or a song from KISS’ first album. Extra credit: At the 1992 American Music Awards, this group won the award for Best New Hard Rock/Metal Band over two grunge bands. Name those two losing acts.
ANSWERS 2) Dokken’s albums are 1987’s “Back for the Attack,” 1997’s ‘Shadowlife,” 2002’s “Long Way Home” and 2008’s “Lightning Strikes Again.” The single “Dream Warriors” helped Freddy Krueger become a music video star during the release of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street 3’ in 1987. 3) Queensryche, which headlines Friday’s segment, ended its 2007 Sunken Garden performance with the 1990 hit “Silent Lucidity.” 4) Helix’s CD was “Wild in the Streets.” That and every other one of its CDs was sung by Brian Vollmer. 5) Tesla is named after Nikola Tesla, and their upcoming DVD is “Comin’ Atcha Live 2008.” 6) Stephen Pearcy was the former lead singer of Ratt, whose video for “Round and Round” in 1984 helped the band reach its peak. Pearcy and Cinderella’s Fred Coury formed the group Arcade in 1992. 7) BulletBoys’ big hit, which included that lyric, was “Smooth Up In Ya.” Their follow-up single in 1988 was their version of the Motown group’s “For the Love of Money.” 8) Y&T, which stands for Yesterday & Today, will be singing “Summertime Girls” on Saturday. 9) Jackyl and singer Jesse James Dupree played at a Georgia K-Mart, and its chainsaw song is “The Lumberjack.” 10) Firehouse beat Nirvana and Alice in Chains to win a 1992 American Music Award. Scoring system: 70-80: You’re a stuck-in-the-’80s expert. 60-69: Almost ready to be a VJ on VH1 Classic. Eddie Trunk’s looking over his shoulder. 50-59: Above average, but your memory’s starting to slip. Must be from all the toxic hairspray fumes. 0-49: You can’t touch former MTV VJ Adam Curry, but you still know more than Riki Rachtman. Jay Nanda | 210SA contributor |
