When you were a kid, art was more about play than deep philosophy and constructed reality. Well, a visit to the Contemporary Art Month show “Radiant: Works Inspired by the Lite Brite,” opening Thursday, July 3, might help jog your childlike creative streak.
Area artists were asked to tap into their inner child for this group show. As inspiration, they used the Lite-Brite, a toy that prompted kids to design art using lit pegs. For this show, artists have been preparing paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, a sound installation, and, of course, a bit of neon, curator Lili Peña Dyer said. 210SA checked in with a couple of artists to see how they’d be interpreting the theme. Kimberly Garza Campbell, a 29-year-old who frequently does mixed-media, said she’d be making a work on paper that would combine drawing and cut shapes. Hopefully, her piece will get the approval of her artistically inclined 7-year-old daughter, Mia. Fellow artist Dayna De Hoyos had conceived of a sculpture using a lamp for the show. De Hoyos, 28, said she often employs creative recycling in her work and described her artistic process as messy and hodge-podgy. “I think about it for a really long time ..... It doesn’t take me a long time to actually create a work,” De Hoyos said. The show also will feature Cathy Cunningham Little, David Alcantar, Sonia Garcia Paschall, Mira Hnatyshyn, Marc Arevalo, Andrew Watson, Jason Paschall, Katherine Brown, Frank Leal Jr., Myriam Lanau, Michelle Love, Dustin Coleman, Kevin Rayhons, Eric Cavazos, Dana Montana, Noah Walker Collins, Caterina Marrone, Marcy McChesney, Noelia Santos and a sound installation by The Mothematicians.
