Fiesta is over, and this weekend is the perfect time to find a new activity to help work off that celebratory pound or two you might have gained.
That’s what Diana Chaloux, a pro with the World Natural Sports Organization, hopes crosses the minds of San Antonio residents. The Diana Chaloux FAME South Central Championships and Sports Expo, an all-day event Saturday, May 2, at Sunset Station will be the first WNSO pro-qualifier ever to be held in San Antonio. S.A. native Chaloux is a fitness consultant, a fitness competitor and a model. “The goal of the whole expo is just to show the diversity of the physical activities, the services, the products that are available right here in San Antonio for people to start leading more fit and healthy lifestyles,” Chaloux said. Men’s Fitness magazine has ranked San Antonio the third-fattest city in the nation, and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 25 and 29 percent of Texas residents were clinically obese in 2006. “I knew that years before I came here, that this is a city that needs help,” Chaloux said. “They just need education. They need education and then motivation.”The expo will offer various fitness, dance and yoga lessons, free five-minute massages, children’s activities, health screenings and information booths on supplementation and nutrition. There also will be a Fit Moms and Dads competition that parents can sign up for on the day of the event. Along with Christian Pro Wrestling matches and Power Team Gym mixed martial arts fights, all of the expo events are there with the intent of sparking new interests and hobbies in San Antonio residents. “That’s the hope,” Chaloux said. “It’s just to get them interested in something — even if they’re not a gym rat per se — that is going to get them moving.” Prizes will be raffled out throughout the day, like memberships to Gold’s Gym, season passes to San Antonio Wolves football games and Southwest Airlines gift cards. Fifteen percent of the proceeds from the event will go toward YMCA memberships for lower-income families. The WNSO pro-qualifier will feature competitors from around the world who hoping to win a chance to compete at the world championship in Toronto in June. They will be competing in categories ranging from swimsuit model to bodybuilding. An all-natural organization, the WNSO has strict guidelines about the use of steroids or any illegal supplements; they would just as soon hand you an empty urine sample as they would a trophy. It’s that all-natural fitness that Chaloux hopes people will see and find inspiring. “There are little things that can be done, and what people don’t understand is that it doesn’t take revamping your entire schedule and starting to go to the gym every single day,” Chaloux said. “It starts with just little changes.” Jonathan Munson | 210SA contributor |
