Name: Girl in a Coma
Profession: Rock band

Girl in a Coma is wrapping up an East Coast tour but the band members took a few minutes to answer our questions via Blackberry.

Where are you right now and what are you doing?

At this very moment (3:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 23) we are in the parking lot of a gas station in Kannapolis, N.C.  We're heading to Charlotte, N.C., to play a show with Peelander Z. We're almost done with an East Coast tour.

So, how surprised are you by the success you have received so early in your career?

Well, we've been at this for seven years so it doesn't feel early. All we've ever wanted was to release a record nationally, and we have. So everything that has been happening to us is just a bonus.

You have played with Joan Jett (also on her label) and Morrissey. What is it like to mingle with two of your idols?

Surreal. Who gets to do that, you know? So we’re just taking it all in and learning.

You actually went on tour with Morrissey. How did you get picked for that?  And how did you manage to meet Joan Jett?

With Joan we were doing a TV show with Sí TV and the element was to be given advice by an idol at the end of the show. Joan really liked what we were doing and showed up to our gig at the Knitting Factory in NYC. After the gig, her and Kenny Laguna signed us on the spot. As for Morrissey, we were in Los Angeles and he and Boz Boorer were in town as well. We were playing at the Viper Room and invited Boz to come hang. He is a friend of ours and produced a demo for us. We knew that Morrissey had been using “Clumsy Sky” (a Girl in a Coma song) in his intro during his tour. So Boz texted us that night to say Moz would be attending as well. He came, he watched and he liked. We met him that night. Soon after, he invited us on tour.

Do you get noticed a lot on the streets in San Antonio?  If so, how does that make you feel?

I guess you can say we do. In stores and restaurants. Even driving. It's really cool ... makes us feel proud.

What is the craziest thing you have seen on tour?

There really is too much to say! How about meeting Jacob Dylan, Slash, Perry Farrell, members from Rage Against the Machine and Cyprus Hill all in one night, in one bus, in the back of the old CBGB's in NYC.

Aside from San Antonio (of course), where was the best city you played in?

Los Angeles is getting up there.

Labels are often overused. How do you describe your music?

There really are too many labels for music. But I guess because of our raw sound, we can fit under garage, punk and just straight up rock and roll.

Aside from touring, are you guys working on new material?

We sure are ... right now, as a matter of fact. We hope to have the album out early next year.

Do you feel that you live a rock 'n' roll lifestyle?

Haha. I guess so! Sleeping on couches, being broke and not having a real job. Sure!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Doing this still. We want to be touring just like Sonic Youth.

What's it feel like to be a legitimate rock star?

Lol ... we're rock stars?
