Chinese food has gotten a bad reputation for being cheap and greasy. Peng's Chinatown, however, is cheap and tasty. This eatery offers up a wide selection for any Chinese food lover. There are great combination plates for hungry shoppers who happen to be in the Ingram Park Mall area.

WHAT: Peng's Chinatown

WHERE: 3211 Wurzbach Road; (210) 681-2345

HOURS: 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday

TASTE SENSATION: Combination plates come with a choice of traditional egg drop soup or the won ton soup. The won ton soup is sure to please with its flavorful broth; it tastes similar to chicken noodle soup but with an Asian flare. Combination plates also come with an order of fried rice or white rice, entrée and a choice of crab Rangoon or an egg roll. A particularly great choice is the broccoli beef or Hunan chicken. There also are classic dishes such as sweet and sour chicken and orange chicken.

TUMS-WORTHY: Does getting your order too quickly count as a legitimate complaint? Sometimes you're two spoonfuls into the soup when the entrée arrives. It makes for an overwhelming experience to see so much food on the table at one time. When it comes to seasoning, stay clear of the soy sauce. The food is flavorful just the way it is, and you might risk a salt overdose.

THE 210 TAKE: Peng's Chinatown is sure to turn into a regular favorite. Catch the daily lunch special from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. Most lunch options are in the $5-$6 range. The dinner specials are also on the inexpensive side, from $7-$10 at the most. The food is prepared fresh and comes out steaming hot. There is something for everyone on the menu, including curry and vegetarian dishes. Peng's has an authentic atmosphere and the wait staff is friendly. However, don't expect to order a beer or other alcoholic beverage with your meal; this restaurant doesn't serve alcohol. The price and portions make Peng's an ideal alternative to mall food after a long day hitting the stores.
