On Saturday, March 29, an estimated 25,000 people will take to the streets for the 12th annual César Chávez March for Justice. The route from 1321 El Paso St. to the Alamo will commemorate the memory of a “great strategist and humanitarian leader who brought awareness to the plight of the forgotten people in the field,” Jaime Martinez, chairman and founder of the march, told 210SA.
Chávez grew up as a farm worker and had experiences that inspired his movement for social justice and ultimately the establishment of the first national union for farm workers. “He never forgot his roots; he was selfless, and he was a firm believer in nonviolence,” Martinez said. The march attracts a variety of participants, like the César Chávez Ambassadors from high schools and colleges. Along with issues of education and immigration reform, the march will focus on health care. A health fair will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. “We want people of all color to come out and pay tribute to a great servant to the people,” Martinez said. Jenina Hernandez | 210SA |
