LAST CALL: Spring theater preview Print E-mail
Wednesday, 05 March 2008

Like its musical and cinematic counterparts, the San Antonio theater scene will provide its own batch of new offerings this spring. Here are some of the more-anticipated local stage productions, ranging from real-life tales to futuristic detective stories, taking place over the next few months.

‘THE CASE OF THE NEON TWINS'
WHEN: March 6, 8-9, 14-16
WHERE: Jump-Start Performance Co., 108 Blue Star in the Blue Star Arts Complex
PLOT: According to Jump-Start's website, “Neon Twins” is a “multimedia future-noir extravaganza” based on the life of an overwhelmed police detective in 2068 San Antonio. Ahh, 2068 San Antonio, where we're so technologically advanced that tamales practically unwrap themselves.

‘ALL KINDS OF HOT’
WHEN: premieres March 21
WHERE: The Overtime Theater, 1216 West Ave.
PLOT: According to Overtime organizers, this one-hour, one-act play “is part-comedic and part-dramatic . . . and shows the myth and reality of the fireman, based on the stories of real San Antonio firemen.”

‘I'M HERBERT' AND ‘THE DIARIES OF ADAM AND EVE'
WHEN: March 28-30
WHERE: Cheever Downstage Theatre, 4301 Broadway Street on the campus of Incarnate Word
PLOT: These dual comedies from the Extended Run Players both center on communication (or lack thereof) between the sexes. One – “I'm Herbert” – takes place on a porch, while the other – “Adam and Eve” – is set in the Garden of Eden. Nice to know that men and women have been on different pages from the very beginning.

‘WONG FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST'
WHEN: March 28-29
WHERE: Jump-Start Performance Co., 108 Blue Star in the Blue Star Arts Complex
PLOT: Los Angeles-based writer/performer Kristina Wong presents a “swear-to-God-not-autobiographical, serio-comic portrayal of the high incidence of anxiety, depression and mental illness among Asian American women.” So that explains Connie Chung's infamous on-air, off-key, meltdown-esque rendition of “Thanks for the Memory” in 2006.

‘LINCOLNESQUE'
WHEN: May 8-18
WHERE: AtticRep, One Trinity Place on the campus of Trinity University
PLOT: A political speechwriter's career is going down the toilet, as is that of his underachieving congressman of a boss. That is, until the speechwriter's brother – a disturbed soul who thinks he is Abraham Lincoln – takes over speechwriting duties, thus making the congressman sound heroic and revolutionary. “Lincolnesque” is billed as “a seriously comic look at Washington's political strategies during elections.” Who needs local theater to get a pathetically comical look at election season, when we can just flip on any one of the 24-hour news networks?
