HE IS: Henry Roland (Henry + The Invisibles)

HIS SOUND: “Stomp” meets rock meets funk and soul. Roland, also the lead singer for local band Starchild, has taken a one-man band approach with his latest venture which includes pots, pans, coffee cans and other household items-turned percussion instruments. In his live show, Roland rotates between playing the guitar, keyboard and his array of converted drum sets for a sound he describes as “junk funk.” “I've done some recording with water jugs and it made some nice tones, so I started thinking it would be really cool to loop in this kind of stuff,” said Roland, 33. “I tried it around the house, going in the kitchen and playing with utensils and coming to the living room and finding interesting things with different tones.”

HIS BACKGROUND: A native San Antonian, Roland has played with bands all over the world, including gigs in London. He has lived in Austin and New York City as well, but now calls San Antonio home again. He plans on turning one of his eclectic solo shows into a live album for release sometime later this year.

HIS INFLUENCES: Sly & the Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Jimi Hendrix

WHERE TO SEE HIM: Roland and his “invisible band” play every Friday night at Rebar (8134 Broadway St.).

THE 210 TAKE: If anything, Roland's music is worth checking out for the novelty factor alone. Plus, it's good music for anyone who's in a dancing mood. “I really feel very special about what I'm doing,” he said. “It's not only instrumental, it's funky and gets kind of psychedelic.”
