Whereas “The Great American Trailer Park Musical” – the last performance to make its way through the Cameo Theatre – elicited laughs for its stereotypical depictions of bumpkinesque Southern folk, the latest Cameo production elicits even more laughs for another reason altogether.
“I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change!,” which debuted at the Cameo on Feb. 1, succeeds because of its, “Oh s**t, I’ve gone though that!” factor.
As much was evident during a near-capacity show on Saturday night, as patrons of each gender nodded in approval – and perhaps familiarity – at what they were witnessing on stage. Over the course of the 130-minute musical (including intermission), “I Love You’s” four leads – played to hysterical perfection by David Alford, Becky King, Lindsey Williams and, in particular, co-star/director Mike Zaller – traipsed through topics like awkward first dates, emotional baggage, breakups, makeups, sex and guys who actually call the next day.
The show consists of numerous shorts, ones that range from raucous (attorneys that specialize in repairing married couple’s boring sex lives) to poignant (King’s spot-on depiction of an older woman who decides to get back in the game via a video dating service).
“I Love You,” which runs at the Cameo Thursdays-Sundays through Feb. 24, is exquisite in its timing. February, after all, is the month of Valentine’s Day, a holiday of glee for some and brutal torture for others.
“I Love You,” a long-running off-Broadway staple,” should satisfy both sides of the Valentine’s Day debate, as it touches on the highs (the undying affection one feels for their spouse) and the lows (sad, tired sex and divorce) of the marriage/dating game. And for those that often find themselves left out as the lone single friend in a circle of new parents, you should find something relatable near the end of the show as well.
“I Love You,” unlike the preceding “Trailer Park Musical,” won’t draw laughs due to its over-the-top nature. Few shows could match “Trailer Park” for that particular distinction.
Instead, it will draw even more laughs for one simple reason. In one instance or another, we’ve all been the stars of this show.
