Rock bands often fall prey to multiple lineup changes, and Van Halen is no exception. The famed rock band, which plays at the AT&T Center on Thursday, Jan. 24, with original lead singer David Lee Roth back in the fold, has featured four different singers during its illustrious 35-plus-year career. Here are some of the more prominent Van Halen members who have come and gone (and in some cases, come back again) during the past four decades.

MICHAEL ANTHONY
ROLE: bassist
TENURE: 1974-2006
PRECEDED BY: Mark Stone (played bass for Mammoth, before the band changed its name to Van Halen)
REPLACED BY: Wolfgang Van Halen
THE 210 TAKE: Anthony, who devoted much of his adult life to Van Halen, was recently replaced by Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang, for the band's North American tour. The only problem was, according to Anthony, is that he learned of the lineup change on the Internet and that without him in the band, the reunion of Van Halen “is not a reunion.”
GARY CHERONE
ROLE: lead singer
TENURE: 1996-1999
PRECEDED BY: Mitch Malloy
REPLACED BY: Sammy Hagar (his second stint with the band)
THE 210 TAKE: For those that have been married multiple times, some failed marriages stand out in one's memory, while the less important ones sort of fade into oblivion. As Van Halen goes, Cherone — who recorded just one album with the band — is that forgotten spouse.

SAMMY HAGAR
ROLE: lead singer
TENURE: 1985-1996, 2003-2005
PRECEDED BY: David Lee Roth (Hagar's first time around with Van Halen), Gary Cherone (second time around)
REPLACED BY: Mitch Malloy (Hagar's first Van Halen stint), David Lee Roth (second time around)
THE 210 TAKE: To Hagar's credit, he helped the band sell a s**tload of albums on the strength of smash hit singles like “Why Can't This Be Love,” “When It's Love” and “Finish What Ya Started.” He was also the singer when Van Halen released the 1991 disasterpiece For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, which basically cancels out the previous statement.

DAVID LEE ROTH
ROLE: lead singer
TENURE: 1972-1985, 2006-present
PRECEDED BY: Roth, a founding member of the band, replaced Sammy Hagar for his second stint with Van Halen.
REPLACED BY: Sammy Hagar (after Roth quit in 1985)
THE 210 TAKE: Some will try and tell you that the band was better off without Roth, and that Van Halen actually released more No. 1 albums with Hagar. When they do, stop them right there and change the subject, as musical expertise obviously isn't their thing.
WOLFGANG VAN HALEN
ROLE: bassist
TENURE: 2006-present
PRECEDED BY: Michael Anthony
REPLACED BY: currently a member
THE 210 TAKE: Wolfgang, son of Van Halen leader Eddie Van Halen, is a pudgy teenager who wasn't born until the Van Hagar era. In other words, he is the personification of blatant nepotism. |
