Who knows more about “American Idol” than a former American Idol? With the premiere of the show's seventh season slated for Tuesday, Jan. 15, on Fox, 210SA caught up with Ruben Studdard — the Season Two winner — to get his impressions of the “Idol” experience, his advice for the show's contestants and his favorite “Idol” performer How do you look back on your “Idol” experience these days? All I can say is the experience, from top to bottom, has been a blessing. From the day on the plane to fly to Hollywood until now, it's been a five-star feeling. I can't complain about anything. Why do some people seem to have a problem with the show once they're done with it? I really don't know ..... Everybody, I guess, looks at things totally different. I've always been a very optimistic person, and “Idol” treated us like stars from the day we were put on the set. They put you in a five-star hotel when they don't have to. I would have stayed in a Holiday Inn. Like I said, I have no complaints about anything. What did you learn from your time on “Idol?” One of the things I learned is that professionalism and timeliness are the keys to success, and having a great attitude means a lot. I've learned that people remember your niceness everywhere you go, but everyone also remembers you for being a prick or being cocky. Hopefully, everybody that gets the chance to meet Ruben Studdard has enjoyed the meeting. What advice would you give to anyone auditioning to be on the show? If being a celebrity or being a singer is your dream, don't stop until you get it, man. I started singing when I was 3 years old, and I didn't hit it big until I auditioned for “American Idol.” I shopped demos like everyone else, but my break was “American Idol.” I never stopped until I made it, and nothing deterred me from that. My only advice for them would be to stay focused. Do you ever escape the show of “American Idol?” I don't know, and I don't think I'll ever want to ..... That's an accomplishment everyone can be proud of. It's like winning a Grammy. No matter where you go, if you win a Grammy, they'll call you a Grammy Award-winning artist. Why do you think your Season Two finale against Clay Aiken took the show to a whole different level ratings-wise? I think it was you guys (the media) hyping up the Clay and Ruben rivalry. We appreciate it. I really do feel like that's what it was – a clash of the titans almost. It was just Clay and I, and I guess our competition between us was the big thing. I don't know if there will ever be another two contestants that will draw that kind of attention between each other. Do you still watch the show? I do. I have my favorites from all the seasons. I loved Elliott Yamin, and he's still one of my favorite singers ..... Bo Bice, of course, and Taylor Hicks, because we're all from Alabama. And Fantasia is a talent. Who's your favorite “Idol” contestant of all time? I think Fantasia is just my absolute favorite. |
