The 2007 movie season was just like any other. There were flops, independent success stories, box-office smashes and plenty of sequels. We won't bore you with a “best of” list, as those tend to simply pretentious feature films made for Hollywood's amusement. Instead, we present to you four awards that certainly won't be handed out come Oscar season.
BEST PICTURE (INVOLVING JUDD APATOW)
THE WINNER: ‘Knocked Up'
THE 210 TAKE: With apologies to “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story,” which we weren't able to see as of press time, it's hard to imagine a film funnier than Apatow's ode to stoned losers and the beautiful, career-driven (and pregnant) women who tolerate them.
OTHERS RECEIVING CONSIDERATION: “Superbad,” “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” (based purely on the hilarious trailers)
BIGGEST LETDOWN
THE WINNER: “Spider-Man 3”
THE 210 TAKE: If we wanted to watch an emo kid exhibit pseudo-depression because of some girl, like Spidey's Peter Parker did for much of this film, we'd go to a Fall Out Boy concert. Not to mention the villains: one (Sandman) who didn't end up being so bad after all; another (New Goblin) who was one “Spider-Man” flick too late; and a third (Venom) that was just plain wasted. But because “Spider-Man 3” banked nearly $900 million worldwide, “Spider-Man 4,” according to imdb.com, is on the way in 2009. Maybe our web-slinging hero will have grown a pair by then.
OTHERS RECEIVING CONSIDERATION: “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End,” “The Heartbreak Kid”
THE ‘ABOUT DAMNED TIME' AWARD
THE WINNER: “The Simpsons Movie”
THE 210 TAKE: The TV show premiered in 1989, and it took producers only 18 years to get a movie into theaters. At least it was worth the wait ..... even if seeing Bart Simpson go full frontal felt dirty. Considering the success of the film ($74 million opening weekend) and the molasses-like nature of the show's creators getting it into theaters in the first place, look for “The Simpsons' Second Movie” sometime in 2025.
OTHERS RECEIVING CONSIDERATION: “Live Free or Die Hard” (It had been 12 years since John McClane dusted off his AARP card and kicked some bad-guy ass.)
THE ‘PROOF THAT LINDSAY LOHAN IS BETTER KNOWN FOR HER RUN-INS WITH THE LAW THAN HER MOVIE CAREER' AWARD
THE WINNER: “I Know Who Killed Me”
THE 210 TAKE: This flick, with a plot too convoluted to get into, opened in July with a paltry $3.5 million gross, or about one-tenth of what Lohan rang up this year in lawyer fees for various infractions. “Mean Girls,” Lohan's last legitimate hit in 2004, seems longer and longer ago with every trip to rehab.
OTHERS RECEIVING CONSIDERATION: “Georgia Rule” |
