ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: Toadies bring noise, nostalgia to S.A. Print E-mail

If the Toadies' reunion show at the White Rabbit on Wednesday night is any indication, nostalgia tours are not limited to the 50-and-over set.

A flood of concertgoers – most in the 22-35 age range – flocked to the club to witness one of the bands that helped define the mid- to late-'90s era of alt-grunge (otherwise known as the post-Cobain era). Clad in their Toadies hoodies, T-shirts and skull caps, the sold-out crowd was not disappointed as the quartet ripped through a rousing 18-song, 80-minute set that not only reminded fans of what once was, but perhaps what one day might be again.

The Toadies, after all, have not ruled out a full-scale reunion.

In the meantime, the band – slated for another sold-out show at the White Rabbit on Thursday night – electrified the Alamo City crowd thanks to screaming tracks like "Mister Love," "I Come From the Water" and "Little Sin." It was a set that one fan simply described as "intense."

According to frontman Vaden Todd Lewis, however, the set didn't truly start until song No. 12, when the band blasted its most popular tune – the radio smash "Possum Kingdom."

From that point, the Toadies kicked into two more songs before venturing backstage for a little pre-encore break.

After a few minutes offstage and more than a few "Toa-dies!" chants from the raucous, crowdsurfer-friendly crowd, the band re-emerged for a four-song encore, highlighted by a sing-along version of "Tyler" – aka the band's most famous single not named "Possum Kingdom."

Sure, the band is a little older these days, now more than a decade removed from the height of its popularity. Lewis has since become a father, and the band members have lost a few hairs along the way. Not that they've lost their sense of humor, as evidenced by the set closer, "Santacide" (featured on the band's MySpace page), which is essentially a Christmas carol on steroids.

The crowd left satisfied, if only because it's nice to take a trip back in time every now and again.

As for the future, we can only hope the Toadies are a part of it.
