Off the River Walk, into the theater Print E-mail

There's more to winter in the Alamo City than a tourist-saturated River Walk and the Alamo Bowl. There is also plenty going on in the local theater circuit. Here are five of the more anticipated plays/musicals slated for various San Antonio theaters this winter.

‘SAN ANTONIO PLAYWRIGHTS' FESTIVAL'
WHEN: Jan. 17-20, 24-26
WHERE: The Overtime Theatre, 1216 West Ave.
THE RUNDOWN: Several San Antonio-based playwrights showcase their works at this festival, dedicated to live music, local artistry and 10-minute plays. It's “Puro San Antonio” ..... for those with short attention spans.

‘CAMELOT'
WHEN: Jan. 22-27
WHERE: Majestic Theatre, 224 E. Houston St.
THE RUNDOWN: Lou Diamond Phillips — as King Arthur — headlines this re-telling of the legendary story of Lancelot, Guinevere and the magical kingdom of Camelot. Sure, you've probably heard the tale 1,000 times, but not with the guy from “Stand and Deliver” and “La Bamba” in the leading role.

‘THE FULL MONTY'
WHEN: Fridays-Sundays, Jan. 25-March 2
WHERE: San Pedro Playhouse, 800 W. Ashby
THE RUNDOWN: A group of guys strip for cash. Unfortunately for the ladies in attendance, it's not the cast of “Ocean's Eleven.”

‘CHINAMEN & BLACK COMEDY'
WHEN: Thursdays, Saturdays-Sundays, Feb. 7-March 1
WHERE: The Sheldon Vexler Theatre, 12500 NW Military
THE RUNDOWN: A pair of one-act plays, “Chinamen” centers on a couple who inadvertently invite an estranged couple to a party, then must keep them in separate rooms to avoid confrontation. “Black Comedy,” meanwhile, tells of a sculptor who steals some furniture from his antique-dealer neighbor to impress his fiancée's father.
