CHRIS QUINN: This show is mostly about farts and , sadly, i'm amused Print E-mail

“He's got me so aggravated I can't even fart.”

Someone once told me never lead off with a quote until Jesus returns, and then lead with what his first words are; or, if the pope says, CENSORED.

And I have followed that bit of advice for the past 12 years. But when I was watching the latest show from executive producers Matt Stone and Trey Parker, “Kenny vs. Spinny,” and heard that one phrase, I had no other choice. It was time to break out the quote marks and kick this boy off with one hell of a marvelous sentence.

The show recently debuted on Comedy Central and airs Sunday nights at 10:30. It began a couple of years ago as a Canadian reality TV show, and now, not unlike Labatt's or the McKenzie brothers, they may be poised to take over our lives.

The premise is brilliant; best friends Kenny Hotz and Spencer Rice go mano a mano in bizarre, senseless competitions to see who's kung fu reigns supreme. The loser must undergo some form of “humiliation.” I would give some descriptions of said humiliations, but they are often more crass and offensive than the contests.

Speaking of gross and offensive, sometimes even the most base and sophomoric jokes or actions are as funny as the most scripted and detailed bit.

And it was in the midst of a colossal fart challenge between the two in the episode “Who Can Blow the Biggest Fart,” that I realized something. This is from me, a grown man about to be a father, and I have no other real observations on life than this: no matter where you are, who you are, what you do, how educated you are, how old you are or the situation, if you're a guy and you hear a fart, you will laugh.

Check this out, the guys even went out and got an actual meter from some gas institute that measures the methane to gauge their farts. All the while, they are bickering, throwing down on each other's moms and letting off with wicked-silly fart jokes. It was like looking into the window of when I roomed with my best friend, and whoever else happened to drop by.

It is odd, but I really wanted to go out and get one of those gas meters and see if I could break 26.7. Because I absolutely know I could.

The pair has a quasi-“The Odd Couple” relationship going on. Kenny is straight-up gross and odious while Spinny tends to lean more toward a slight level of decorum. This is most evident in the episode, “Who Can Eat the Most Meat.” Kenny dumps a large barrel full of raw entrails and innards on Spinny as the poor guy sleeps. As I watched Spinny chase Kenny down and then proceed to beat him with a lamp cord, I could see just a kiss of Tony Randall peeking through. Overall, a beauty of a show.
