There's nothing quite like the feeling of being stuffed to the gills (pun intended) with great sushi, great sake and Sapporo. Throw in a fun and trendy atmosphere and some good music, and you've got yourself a place you can hang with friends and show off how you know the difference between sashimi, maki and nigiri sushi. Isaac Yang, S.A. native, proprietor and chef at Wasabi, will teach you everything you need to know about sushi. Just sit at the bar and ask him.
WHAT: Wasabi Sushi Bistro and More WHERE: 9211 I-10 West at Wurzbach; (210) 877-2300; wasabisa.com TASTE SENSATION: Oh, let's see, there are plenty of taste sensations from which to choose. To start with, try the Crab Spring Rolls. They are nothing short of fabulous with a flaky shell and yummy crab and spicy sauce. For a light appetizer, try the edamame, boiled and salted to perfection. All the sushi we tried was fab (especially the Rock ’n’ Roll and Spider rolls), but one of the best dishes (and biggest values) was the Wasabi's Seafood Pasta. Dig into a huge bowl chock full of yummy noodles and seafood. It's definitely enough for two and is one of the lower-priced entrees on the menu. TUMS-WORTHY: We had to think hard to come up with something that didn't sit well with us at Wasabi, but there were a few things: Parking and no booze. The lot is shared with several businesses, so finding a space is a challenge on busy nights. And it would be nice to have adult drinks other than sake, beer and wine, which don't suit everyone's tastes (although nothing beats an ice-cold Sapporo pint with an awesome spicy tuna roll — mmm mmm, good!). THE 210 TAKE: Wasabi is a great place to go for sushi and other dishes if raw fish isn't quite your speed. The atmosphere is contemporary and relaxed, and the staff is willing to answer questions about everything from the sake to the Salmon Skin roll (roasted salmon skin and veggies in ginger sauce). If Isaac's around, he'll school you on sushi if you don't know, and all the guys behind the sushi bar greet you with a friendly yell when you walk in. It's not the cheapest place to chow down, but it's fun, colorful and tasty. Julie Ann Vera | 210SA |
