Get those elbows off the table. Chew with your mouth closed. And, please, reach for the correct fork for that salad.
Perhaps everyone needs a little etiquette reminders from time to time. For students who want to master their manners, the University of the Incarnate Word Business Club is hosting such a dinner. The idea is to ensure the college-aged know how to make Miss Manners proud at the office holiday party or job interview. “When in an interview, it's not about the dinner,” said Jessica Leist, president of the Business Club. “It's about the interview between you and your potential boss.” The meal will cover common etiquette rules. For example, you must pass the dinner rolls to the right, even if the person across from you asks for them; men must stand when a woman gets up from the table; and your napkin should be in your lap while eating. Then there are the more unforgivable guidelines that should never be broken. The evening will start with a social hour at which appetizers, and mock cocktails of Sprite and apple juice will be served. Afterward, students will move on to soup, salad, chicken oregano and dessert. The food is from the campus dining service. Professors and professionals will facilitate conversation. A professional from Enterprise-Rent-A-Car who gives speeches on proper etiquette will review the subject at the dinner. After the event, Leist said students should be able to walk away with a better understanding of how good manners can be an asset at a lunch or dinner interview. “The main drive is to help people become more comfortable,” Leist said. “It's always good to practice.” Emily Messer | 210SA |
