When “The Scene” was on public-access television a couple of years ago, executive producer Jennifer Broich and crew dedicated the program to San Antonio bands as well as any national acts that happened to be coming through the Alamo City.

Though pleased with the product, Broich felt “The Scene” needed a retooled format, as well as an expanded audience. So she, along with fellow producer Matthew Cockrell, made the show's content specific to San Antonio artists and relocated it from public access to paid programming.

“We completely revamped it and took it to a whole new level,” Broich said.

The end result, a revitalized “The Scene,” airs every Friday at 12:30 a.m. on San Antonio's CW affiliate. The show's first season, which began on Oct. 5, is slated for a 13-episode run.

“I'm not 110 percent happy with the time slot,” Broich said. “It's late, and a lot of times, people have to work the next day. It's hard to get as many viewers as we'd like to.”

Fortunately for Broich and her fellow “Scene” producers, they are targeting a younger demographic, which is prone to staying up until the wee hours of the morning. Those viewers can watch features on local bands, about four or five per show, including live concert footage and interviews with band members.

And whereas “The Scene” in its public-access days was dedicated solely to rock music, the revamped program is open to a wider variety of genres. Broich hopes to feature jazz, country and reggae groups.

Even so, she knows which type of music drives San Antonio.

“A lot of our content will be rock-oriented, like metal, rockabilly and punk rock,” Broich said. “We're trying to get a little bit of everything, but our main focus is rock.”

For that, Alex Cantu — lead guitarist for San Antonio's Brotherhood — is pleased.

After all, his band, a raucous quartet showcased on the first CW broadcast of “The Scene,” most certainly falls under the umbrella of hard rock.

“It's a great thing for a lot of local bands to get exposure on a network,” Cantu said. “It helps out a lot ..... Not a lot of bands (from San Antonio) get exposure. Everyone from New York and L.A. are the bands getting signed, but we want that exposure, too.”

Now, with “The Scene” on the, well, scene in San Antonio, they just might get it.
