Tasty varieties abound, but may dent your pocketbook.

If you're in a rush for lunch but still want to grab a high-quality meal, there's no need to settle for the Lean Cuisine that's been in the office freezer for two months (we know, we've been there). If you're boxed in by downtown, Loops 281 and 410 and I-35, Central Market can fulfill your quickie gourmet desires with everything from coffees to full meals to sandwiches to sushi. You can pick up what you want and run or sit in the small dining area or outdoor patio. x  WHAT: H-E-B Central Market

TASTE SENSATION: If you want it, they've pretty much got it at Central Market. You can grab a cheese panini for $3.99 or do pre-packaged sushi (though made fresh that day) for under $6. Or you can try freshly made stir-fry or the salad bar for $6.99 a pound. There also are tons of sauces, prepackaged sandwiches, salads and meals (the seafood enchiladas are good) ready to grab and go in case you can't wait in line for the custom-made stuff. The Dinner for Two meals are a great way to spruce up the evening meal without having to make it all yourself. Don't forget the coffee bar, and if you've got that grocery list handy, you can do your shopping, too.

TUMS-WORTHY: Watch out not to stack your shopping basket too high with all the goodies displayed before your eyes. The Chef's Case, for instance, looks totally yummy, with its individual meatloaf, lasagna, enchiladas and pot pie portions. But they charge by the pound, so that huge lasagna square could cost a pretty penny at $6.99 per pound. Adding cheese or other toppings to sandwiches could nudge up the prices significantly, and if you love salad, you'll pay for it at the slightly pricey salad bar. Also, if you expect to lounge leisurely in the air-conditioned comfort of the indoor seating area, think again at lunchtime. It's a small, cramped space, and table vultures are just waiting for you to lift your butt from your chair so they can grab it.

THE 210 TAKE: Central Market allows you to make wise choices even if you're short on time. Everything you need is close at hand, and it's quality stuff even if some of it is a little pricey. You have the choice of sticking with the basics or getting pretty fancy.
