Studying abroad can be a great experience made even greater with a little planning. Get started by making a checklist of what needs to be done.

For college students, studying abroad can be the perfect opportunity to polish language skills, become more culturally aware or just take a new class that's lots of fun. Studying abroad has become increasingly popular with more and more jet-set students ready to pack their bags and explore a new country. The number of U.S. students studying abroad has risen by more than 144 percent over the decade, according to a study by the International Institute of Education, a nonprofit organization. Here are some tips students can use to ensure a quality experience while abroad.

RESEARCH
Hit the books and the Internet to find the destination that best suites you and your interests. Figure out when, why and how to study abroad.
“We definitely tell students to start planning early,” said Holly Hill, assistant director for student abroad and exchange programs at the University of Texas-San Antonio.

SET A BUDGET
Some programs are cheaper than others, so Hill suggests meeting early with an adviser to find out appropriate programs for everyone.

DOCUMENTS
Get your passport or visa as early as possible. It can take six to eight weeks, or even longer, to receive your passport. If you're working or planning on an extended stay, check to see if you'll need a visa.
The U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs suggests making a copy of vital documents and an itinerary and leaving it with a close friend or relative and registering your presence with the nearest American Embassy or consulate.

SCHOLARSHIPS
College students don't have to put a dent in their wallets to hit archeological sites in Peru or art museums in Paris. The Institute of International Education has the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, which awards undergraduate students receiving the Federal Pell Grant. Check scholarship databases, such as InternationalScholarhips.com, iefa.org and internationalstudent.com. Check with your study-abroad office for additional study-abroad scholarships.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
Travel with insurance, which your college or university will probably require. Know your medical history and needs and inform someone of any medical attention you may need. For the small things, pack common over-the-counter meds and hygiene products.

BE PREPARED FOR EMERGENCIES
Know how to call for help, acquire information on medical emergencies before you go, know what your insurance covers and learn any potential safety risks of the country or area you are visiting. Make sure you have all the necessary vaccines and that you understand local laws and customs.
