Looks like the world's oldest profession might get an upgrade. How else do you explain emergency prostitute shoes? The Aphrodite Project (theaphroditeproject.tv) presents Platforms, what the project calls “an interactive, wearable device that is both a conceptual homage to the Greek goddess Aphrodite, as well as a practical object for the contemporary sex worker.” It sure as Mata Hari isn't your typical tech. Besides video, the Platform 001 sandals sport an alarm system, GPS and an emergency button that relays the prostitute's location and a silent alarm for emergency services or sex workers' rights groups. The project bases the sandals functionality on “extensive social research and interviews with sex workers and their allies.” Feel free to slide into a pair if you're up in New Jersey this month. Gallery Aferro in Newark will have demo sandals available for test runs from noon to 6 p.m. on Sept. 15, 22 and 29. René A. Guzman | 210SA contributor |
