Bob Rules usually paints oil on canvas. Going clockwise, beginning above: Cycles, Corporate, SeverityÖ Two and The Storm After.

WHO: Bob Rules

MEDIUM: Painting, oil on canvas

BEST KNOWN FOR: Not sticking to a particular style. Basically, Rules (real name Bob Ramirez) starts out with a general idea of what he plans to put on the canvas, then dives right in. “It's what I'm thinking at that second, and I just run with it,” he said. “There aren't really any boundaries, everything from everyday life to nightmares to random thoughts when I'm daydreaming. Those are pretty much the three main things. But that's the beauty of it. I never like to put too many limits.”

BACKGROUND: A San Antonio native, Rules, 25, is a graduate of Holmes High School. He took an interest in art at an early age and began sketching at age 4. And though he's still crafting his own brand of art all these years later, Rules is proud to have never taken one art lesson. “I'm proud to say it's all been on my own,” he said. “No one taught me.”

PAYING THE BILLS: In addition to selling some of his work to generate income, Rules works a number of odd jobs and plans on one day turning his passion into a full-time career. “I've never really been known and just kind of stuck to myself,” he said. “But now that I'm older, I'd like to expose (my work) to the world as much as I can ..... I really like focusing and putting all my time into art, and having a 9-5 (job) would cut that in half.”

CHECK HIM OUT: Rules will have an exhibit at Ruta Maya Coffee House (107 E. Martin St.) all November long, but anyone who wants to see his work before then can log on to his Web site at bobrulesart.com.
