The Piñata Chicken and Southside Brawlers are just two creative previous entries. One year, a contestant placed a couch on lawnmower wheels.

For the most part, Contemporary Art Month consists of dozens of visual art exhibits hanging in galleries and museums around town.

But in the last few years, a totally different kind of art project has become one of the highlights of CAM. And it's easy to see why.

Here's what you can expect at the third annual Dignowity Hill Pushcart Derby: Prominent San Antonio artists Lloyd Walsh, Andy Benavides and a half-dozen others steering elaborately decorated homemade pushcarts down the hill to the finish line, while performance artist Michelle Valdez (aka Bunnyphonic), dressed as a cupcake, runs up and down the racetrack playing an accordion.

“It's just a big silly performance art piece,” said derby founder Cruz Ortiz, an artist and community activist. When he announced the event in 2005, “People said to me, ‘It's not art on the walls.' Well, yeah. Exactly.”

An advocate of public art and co-founder of San Anto Cultural Arts, Ortiz dreamed up the idea as part of a larger effort to revitalize the East Side. He hoped the event would help turn Dignowity Park from “a crackhead park,” as he put it, to a viable community gathering place.

This year, the Maybe Laters and the Psychics will perform live, and DJ JJ Lopez will spin. Barbecue, raspas and other refreshments will be available. Kids are invited to compete in the Minor League races.
