After harboring dreams of professional artistry as a young girl in Piedras Negras, Mexico, Veliz gained her American citizenship at 18 and a degree from an art institute soon after. She settled into a job in graphic design. Then, in 1997, Veliz got married. “We got married in Piedras Negras, and my husband (Richard Veliz) saw these small oil and pastel paintings with my name on them,” said Veliz, who now resides in San Antonio. “He asked me, ‘What are you doing? You need to be painting.'.” So Carla Veliz heeded her husband's advice and set up shop in the couple's home. Ten years later, painting is a full-time job for Veliz, who will bring some of her work to the San Antonio Learning Center on Thursday, July 19. Her “Transiciones” exhibit debuts as part of Contemporary Art Month. The exhibit, which will feature abstract paintings dating x from 2002 to present, is aptly titled. “There are a few older paintings and some new things,” said Veliz, 36. “I think it's interesting for the collectors to see how my mind has traveled through the last five years.” Traveling is at the forefront of Veliz's agenda these days. In December, she will showcase several of her paintings at the Florence Biennial in Italy. The event features 800 of the best artists from around the world. The Florence Biennial hosts an international committee that scours the globe for the best and brightest artists, sculptors and visual artists. “When I got the invite, I must have read it like 10 times,” Veliz said. “I wanted to make sure it was me because never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd have something like this."
