WHAT: Metro WHERE: 229 E. Houston St.
THE WEB: myspace.com/metrodowntownsa GET YOUR DRINK ON: This spacious basement-level ultra lounge is open 5 p.m.-2 a.m. Wednesday-Saturday. The lounge has happy hour specials Wednesday-Friday and live music on Wednesdays, Metro partner Luis Muñoz said. HOTTIES QUOTIENT: Moderately high. This swank lounge may be below the street's surface, but it still has that superficial appeal. If you're after a well-dressed date, this is the place to go. The code for attire is “dress to impress,” and patrons of the bar's opening night on July 14 were certainly following those guidelines. Or as Muñoz describes it, “As upscale as you can be while still having fun.” WALLET HANGOVER: Bring your billfold. While this lounge isn't the most expensive place in town, it probably isn't the cheapest, either. You can expect to get a couple of cocktails for less than $20. THE 210 TAKE: Though the opening of this club was frustratingly delayed, the final product is a nicely polished space. For an underground lair, the (some said overly) brightly lit bar offers a see-and-be-seen attitude to a dark claustrophobic air. There's room to dance to pop and Top 40 tunes in the glow of giant video screens. Metro also has 12 VIP areas ringed with modern couches. However, if most of the nooks are reserved, as was the case opening night, that could leave a girl balancing on her three-inch heels while empty sofas go to waste. The highlight of the night: Bartender Chris Vera's penchant for creating new cocktails on the fly. Just give him a hint about your favorite drinks and see what he concocts next.
