The band Passenger — (from left) Tommy Meek, Jim Meek, Rome Hooks and Deric Wynne — mixes indie rock with pop sensibilities. The band plays Monkeyfest 007 on Friday, July 13.

THEY ARE:
Passenger

THE SOUND:
A self-described indie rock band with pop sensibilities. Though the current group has only been together about six months, several of the band members were part of long-time local band Meek. Their musical inclinations are a lot like one of the band's favorite a.m. pick-me-ups. The guys like to order a “John Wayne” — grab an espresso shot glass, pour in a bit of cold half and half, add three pumps of vanilla coffee syrup, float two shots of hot espresso on top, then chug. Like their sound, it's a dash of fun and nervous energy that's quite tasty.

THE BAND:
Who are the passengers? Guitarist Deric Wynne; vocalist and occasional guitarist Jim Meek; his brother Tommy Meek on drums; and bassist Rome Hooks round out the road trip.

FACTOID:
Jim Meek had his large intestine removed and now has a flashy tattoo of a large intestine covering his right arm. When you see him, check out what he ate for lunch .....

THEIR WORDS:
Wynne, 26, and Jim Meek, 28, write the band's songs in Meek's in-home studio. They claim the juxtaposition of Wynne's obsessive-compulsive tendencies with Meek's attention-deficit traits is the key to their harmony. “It couldn't be done without either one of us,” Meek said. “The compulsive/ADD mix seems to work out well,” Wynne added. “It's a nice little cocktail,” Meek said with a grin.

WHERE TO SEE THEM:

THE 210 TAKE:
Watching the guys perform is about as much fun as downing a John Wayne and shooting the sh** on a sunny day. The lyrics to Passenger's most popular song, “Red Walls,” may chant “It's just not that easy/to reach inside and turn it off,” but listeners will find that it's quite easy to take a liking to the band. Band members expect to put out their first album, titled “You Are Here,” in about a month. Hold on for the ride.
