Jessica Belasco: Reunion's not on my to-do list Print E-mail

So my 10-year high school reunion is coming up. This makes me think two things:

1. I am old.

2. But not so old that I'm senile and want to drive five hours to Dallas to hang out with a bunch of people I couldn't stand the first time around.

Let me be clear: I wasn't a loser in high school. I had friends. I had a boyfriend. I went to the prom.

So I'm not keeping away out of some old fear of the popular kids.

And I'm not keeping away because I'm ashamed of what I've done since graduation.

I went to college and got a master's degree to boot. I have a cool job. I didn't get fat.

But again, I wasn't bitter enough in high school that I now need to say, “Hey, look how awesome I am!”

Anyway, I know what's up with most of my old friends because we kept in touch.

The ones I didn't keep track of? There's a reason for that.

A party with the Richardson High School Class of 1997 just sounds uncomfortable.

I'm imagining hanging out in a hotel conference room with people I had maybe one class with, making mundane conversation. (“So you work in insurance and have a toddler named Mackenzie? Fascinating! What was your name again?”)

Besides, I get updates on former classmates from our mutual friends or from my mother when she runs into their parents at the grocery store.

And if I want to know more — that's what MySpace is for, people.
