So my 10-year high school reunion is coming up. This makes me think two things: 1. I am old. 2. But not so old that I'm senile and want to drive five hours to Dallas to hang out with a bunch of people I couldn't stand the first time around. Let me be clear: I wasn't a loser in high school. I had friends. I had a boyfriend. I went to the prom. And I'm not keeping away because I'm ashamed of what I've done since graduation. I went to college and got a master's degree to boot. I have a cool job. I didn't get fat. But again, I wasn't bitter enough in high school that I now need to say, “Hey, look how awesome I am!” Anyway, I know what's up with most of my old friends because we kept in touch. The ones I didn't keep track of? There's a reason for that. A party with the Richardson High School Class of 1997 just sounds uncomfortable. I'm imagining hanging out in a hotel conference room with people I had maybe one class with, making mundane conversation. (“So you work in insurance and have a toddler named Mackenzie? Fascinating! What was your name again?”) Besides, I get updates on former classmates from our mutual friends or from my mother when she runs into their parents at the grocery store. And if I want to know more — that's what MySpace is for, people. Jessica Belasco | 210SA contributor
