DJ ready to pump energy into S.A. Print E-mail
Wednesday, 13 June 2007

Despite the presence of thousands of fellow DJs across the globe, Ferry Corsten was flattered — but not altogether stunned — when DJ Magazine readers voted him the No. 6 DJ in the world in a recent poll. After all, with years in the music business where he has remixed the likes of Duran Duran and Moby, Corsten — a native of the Netherlands — has grown accustomed to such accolades.

Corsten, who will bring his live DJ show to Club Rio on Thursday, June 14, has released a number of gold records and toured the world. He also is an acclaimed producer, and about half of his live DJ show will feature original material.

Corsten recently talked to 210SA.

So what's it like to be considered the No. 6 DJ in the world?
I was happy. Being in the top 10 anywhere really is fantastic because you're basically ahead of so many thousands of people. It's definitely an honor and good to know that you're being noticed. On the other hand, it's great the list is there, but the list is more about popularity and style over skills. But it's the leading list in the industry, and it's great to be on there.

Has your production schedule been cut back since your DJ bookings have picked up?
When I wasn't DJing as much, I did a lot of production. I'd put out a record every few weeks that would have three or four tracks on it. Nowadays, it's definitely different. I'm in the studio and then have to leave to play whatever place in the world, and sometimes I'm traveling for the whole month. The production is slow then. Where I can really feel it is in the studio, when I'm in the flow of the track, but all of a sudden it's the weekend, and I have to go. It interrupts me sometimes.

When did you think you could make a career out of this?
When I finished school, I basically told myself that I'm giving myself a year to try. I was still living at home with my parents at the time, and I told myself that I'd give it a year, and if I made it to a certain income level, I'd give myself another year and see how it goes. If not, I'd go find a job for what I studied (electrical engineering). The results were a lot better than I would ever have dreamed of, and the rest is history.

Who is the coolest artist you've worked with?
For me, it was really cool to work with Duran Duran ..... It was really cool because they're such a high-profile band, and I grew up on them back in the '80s. It was sort of an honor to work with them.

Anyone out there you'd really like to work with, but haven't yet had the opportunity?
There's always someone that I think is amazing, and that's Bono from U2. His voice is very special, and it would be amazing.

In what part of the world is your live show most popular?
The U.S. is always very good, and so is Australia. But the craziest place I've ever experienced is Argentina. There's something in the culture over there, because they party like crazy and really go mental.

What can people expect from the show in San Antonio?
It's definitely like a dance club, but I play a set that's not just a DJ playing different records. Fifty percent of the stuff I play are my productions, and a lot of people go there and expect those tracks to be played. I have some new stuff I just produced that I'm just testing out right now. In general, it's a lot of fun and high energy. I hope everyone leaves the show with a smile on their face.
