Jennifer Azzi sees her role as increasingly important as schools focus less on physical education.

During Jennifer Azzi's 13-season career as a professional basketball player, the point guard stayed busy breaking WNBA records for three-point field goal percentage and free-throw percentage, winning a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics and appearing in Reebok commercials.

Since retiring from pro ball in 2004, though, Azzi has been busier than ever, using her experience and expertise to help others get fit. On June 8-9 Azzi will return to San Antonio, where she played for the Silver Stars during her last season in the WBNA, to educate kids on health and fitness as part of the league's annual Be Tour at the Texas Folklife Festival.

“I think hearing it from me, there's instant credibility,” Azzi said about teaching kids the importance of regular physical activity. “They know that I've done it, and I do it. I do it every day. They see me and know that I walk the walk. It makes them listen to me.”

San Antonio is the third stop on the national mobile expo, which brings a basketball court and several tents where kids can shoot hoops, participate in a fitness clinic, record a rap song, sample healthy snacks and win prizes. Some Silver Stars are scheduled to make an appearance.

Azzi said both boys and girls enjoy the Be Tour.

“They love it. They have fun, they learn,” she said. “It gives them a chance to meet not only myself, but other WNBA players and to see us as normal and be able to dream about achieving things, be in sports or whatever.”
