WHAT: “What is the Sound?”

WHEN: 6-10 p.m., Friday, June 1

WHERE: Casa Chiapas, 928 S. Alamo

HOW MUCH: Free

WHAT TO EXPECT: A handful of local artists listened to some jazz music and visualized it in their art. That work will be on display. “What is the Sound?” also will feature local poet Robert Soto, an Air Force member who's served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Soto's wife, Carmen, also will be one of the featured artists.

THE ORIGINS: The inspiration for the event came after organizer Le Lowry read a Robert Soto poem titled, “What is the Sound?”

“So I thought, ‘what is the sound of jazz?'.” Lowry said. “I talked to these artists, gave them some jazz CDs to work with, and asked them to try to visualize it, to bring it to life.”

What resulted was a handful of local artists — six or so, Lowry said — who will showcase what they came up through July 1 at Casa Chiapas. Although the summer showcase has been on display since May 28, Lowry delayed the opening reception to coincide with the arts-friendly First Friday.

“Some of the art are going to be illustrations, comic book-type illustrations,” Lowry said. “We'll even have some multimedia.”

UP NEXT: Lowry, who prefers to host one art event per season, will have a fall show in September that will feature the work of local photographer Darren Abate.
