For four San Antonio artists, it's an honor to have their work taken out to a parking lot and run over by a steamroller.

That's because their woodcuts won't be destroyed β€” they will be used to create giant prints as part of Printmaking Month.

During Steamroller Prints, artists Alex Rubio, Gary Sweeney, Justin Parr and Hebron Chism will apply paint to their designs carved in plywood, which will then be covered by art paper and steamrolled.

Each artist will create five prints to be auctioned off in July.

It's the second year in a row StoneMetal Press has held the event, which allows artists to make monumental prints that don't fit on normal presses. It's also a lot of fun to watch for both artists and non-artists, said Le Green Schubert, director of StoneMetal Press.

β€œIt's kind of neat because it gives us a chance to demonstrate relief printmaking on a scale that's real easy to see, so we can share it with a large group of people all at once,” Schubert said.
