| Can S.A. concert scene stay strong if Verizon closes? |

Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Selma is on the selling block, but with a catch. According to Live Nation Inc., which currently owns the amphitheater, any buyer would not be allowed to use it as a live concert venue for an undisclosed amount of time. That stipulation apparently is a means to keep Live Nation's competition from booking concerts at the site, which basically means that anyone purchasing the site would essentially be buying the land and not the 20,000-seat amphitheater. But even if Verizon Wireless Amphitheater is sold in the near future, all concerts that already are booked — including Kenny Chesney in June and Ozzfest in August — would proceed as scheduled. “Regardless of whether a sale is completed or not, we are committed to the 2007 concert season and will continue bringing fans the same great music and customer service they have come to expect,” Live Nation spokesman Uri Bogler said in a statement. Live Nation added that a sale of the amphitheater was not imminent or even guaranteed. Jack Orbin, president of Stone City Attractions, a competitor to Live Nation, said if the amphitheater closes, he expects San Antonio's concert itinerary to remain relatively unchanged. “If Verizon does not host concerts, I believe those concerts will be absorbed into other venues,” Orbin said. “For the concert-going public that might be concerned we will lose shows, I would say emphatically, ‘no.'.” Adolfo Pesquera | 210SA contributor |
