Jiggers, where punk comes to play
WHAT: Jiggers
WHERE: 1639 Babcock Road at Callaghan
THE DIGITS: (210) 348-2955
ON THE WEB: jiggersclub.com, myspace.com/emokidsneedlove
GET YOUR DRINK ON: Noon-2 a.m. daily
HOTTIES QUOTIENT: Depends on your type. If you like 'em with piercings, tats and hair dyed improbable colors, you'll be in heaven. Suggested opening line: “So, who's your favorite Ramone?”
WALLET HANGOVER: Low. There's never a cover, although drink prices rise slightly during events. Beer rules here, and small pitchers run $3.75-$4 while large pitchers run $6.25-$6.50; bottles cost $2.75-$3.50. Most mixed drinks cost about $3.50. Happy hour runs until 7 p.m. with $2.75 wells and $2.50 bottled beers. There also are drink specials daily. On Sundays, it's $3 Bloody Marys and barbecue.
THE 210 TAKE: Punk still is alive and well at Jiggers, which is host to local and touring bands on Fridays-Saturdays and sometimes Tuesdays, and punk karaoke on Wednesdays and Sundays (it's cash karaoke on Sundays). Hard Luck Heroes, Backdoor Romeos, Second to None and Broken 13 are regulars on the tiny stage. Not a fan? Monday is game night with cash pool and pool league. There also are two dart boards and a jukebox in this small, smoky space. If you like punk, you'll eventually wind up here. Even if you don't, it's a nice place to visit to remind yourself there really is an alternative scene in San Antonio.
