WHAT: The Lion and Rose

WHERE: There are locations in Alamo Heights at 5148 Broadway, in the Park North Shopping Center at 842 N.W. Loop 410 and in Stone Oak at 700 Sonterra Blvd., No. 318

THE DIGITS: Alamo Heights: (210) 822-7673; Park North, (210) 798-4154; Stone Oak, (210) 798-5466

ON THE WEB: thelionandrose.com

GET YOUR DRINK ON: 11 a.m.-2 a.m. daily; the kitchen closes at midnight

HOTTIES QUOTIENT: Middle to high. With its vast selection of beers, tasty pub food served late and spacious yet cozy interior, the Lion and Rose attracts a wide variety of patrons, many of whom are attractive college students or professionals in their 20s and 30s.

WALLET HANGOVER: It can be a bit pricier than your average sports bar, but fine British and Irish brews don't usually come cheap. Pints of most imported beers cost $5 or more. The hearty entrees range in price from less than $10 for a sandwich or a chicken pot pie to more than $10 for fried shrimp or steak au poivre. Happy hour is every day, 4-7p.m.

THE 210 TAKE: With its dark wood furnishings, smoky air and multiple TVs broadcasting soccer (sorry, football) and other sports, the Lion and Rose does an admirable job of evoking a real British pub, though it can verge on cheesy — what's with the suit of armor and the Catholic schoolgirl uniforms on the waitresses? Nevertheless, the bar's formula of good food, drink and atmosphere has proven so popular that three locations have opened in fewer than three years, and two new locations are in the works in Helotes and at the Rim at La Cantera.
