Look & Listen: ‘Rock star' painter Godard uses alcohol in art, not life Print E-mail

NAME: Michael Godard

WHEN: 6-9 p.m., Friday, May 4

WHERE: Oh My Godard Gallery, !111 W. Crockett St., Suite 209

WHAT TO EXPECT: Godard, known as “the rock star of the art world,” will be on hand to sign purchased artwork, draw personalized sketches and converse with fans. The multi-tattooed Godard opened the Oh My Godard Gallery in November.

MEDIUM: Godard, who keeps a home in Las Vegas and southern California, is known for his paintings of various martini glasses with a black background. He also has gained notoriety for experimenting in his art with other recreational products, such as cigars, wine and champagne. Godard's decision to pursue such artistic endeavors is a curious one, particularly since he doesn't drink alcohol. In fact, he is stopping off in San Antonio as part of the “Don't Drink and Draw” tour.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: “When I called my agent and told him I was going to start something new (in my art), alcohol, he said, ‘you don't even drink.' But I just see this as a great vehicle to speak to people. Drinking is what people use to celebrate anniversaries or calm their nerves, or when people get together to laugh or communicate. Drinking is a social thing, and people see my tattoos, and they always ask me if I'm in sort of a (substance abuse) program. But I've never been interested in alcohol. I have other vices, like gambling, but alcohol is not one of them. It either puts me to sleep or gives me a headache.”
