Barry: The Spurs are focused, and he's keeping an eye on the Warriors" Print E-mail

Brent Barry came to San Antonio in 2004 looking for an NBA championship, and it didn't take him long to find one. In his first season with the Spurs (2004-2005), San Antonio defeated Detroit in Game 7 of the NBA Finals to claim its third title. It marked the first time that Barry had played for a championship team, having spent previous seasons with four other teams, including Seattle and Miami. Now in his third season with the Spurs, Barry is a key member of a team in search of its fourth NBA title. Barry recently talked to 210SA.

You've played for five NBA teams and traveled all over the country. What is your favorite place to play?
I'd have to say New York, and I think that's what a lot of guys would say. It's basketball's Mecca. Playing in Madison Square Garden, there's so much history there. It's a great place to play.

Having lived in San Antonio for three years now, do you think you've really gotten a feel for the city?
Having lived in California, it's funny because sometimes I'll have friends come visit me, and they'll expect to see saloons with swinging doors like it was back in the old days. But (San Antonio) is a great city, and my wife (Erin) and I are really happy to be here.

If you had to pay money to see any NBA player in action, who would it be?
There are a lot of guys that I'd pay money to see. Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade. And to give my support in San Antonio, I'd have to see Tim Duncan. But really, with the way they're playing this year, I'd also have to say the (Golden State) Warriors. I've been following them for a long time.

You followed the Warriors growing up because your father, Rick, played for them. Also, two of your brothers — Drew and Jon — played in the NBA. Was it tough growing up in such a basketball-rich family?
It's a big part of my life, and I'll never take that for granted. (Basketball) has allowed me to travel and to learn more about myself.

Some people seem to have the Spurs and Dallas penciled in for a showdown in the Western Conference finals. Is it tough to block that sort of stuff out?
Well, we've got a guy that makes sure that doesn't happen. First name, Gregg. Last name, Popovich. He makes sure we focus on what we have to do. But honestly, in the playoffs, you just have to take it one game at a time.
