Can you Fiesta on $20? Sure, just not at Oyster Bake, NIOSA, the Fiesta Flambeau parade and a list of other parties.
Between parking, admission and beer, Fiesta can get expensive quick.
Even if you buy in advance to save a few bucks, it costs $13 just to walk into Oyster Bake, $18 if you take the VIA Park & Ride or $23 if you park at St. Mary's.
NIOSA is slightly more affordable for $10 at the gate or $8 in advance. But pay $10 to park downtown, and you're either broke or a couple of bucks short of a beer. Taking the $6 VIA Park & Ride won't get you much further.
Fiesta Gartenfest on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at Beethoven Maennerchor Halle Und Garten in King William is perhaps your best bet for Fiesta on a budget. Buy tickets in advance for only $3. At the door, they're $5.
Free parking is available across the street from the hall if you get there early enough. Otherwise, look for free street parking in area neighborhoods. It'll leave you with more cash for the drinks and snacks waiting for you inside this German party. And $15 after admission is enough to try a glass of German wine, split a pitcher of beer with friends and sample munchies such as potato pancakes, Bratwurst and pretzels.
Fiesta Gartenfest goes from 5 p.m. to midnight and features a 50-piece live band. King Antonio makes his official Fiesta visit Thursday night.
If potato pancakes and lederhosen aren't your style, try Fiestas Fantasias in Market Square, where you can watch folklorico dance and listen to Latin jazz, tejano, conjunto and country without dropping a dime.
That means more cash for funnel cakes, meat on a stick, Fiesta trinkets and, of course, beer.
Even though the family-friendly event is free, parking is another story. If you work and park downtown, consider walking — it's something you'll have to do even if you pay to park a little closer. VIA doesn't offer Park & Ride service to Market Square for Fiesta, but $5 parking is available at the Farmers Market Plaza roof garage across the street.
If you manage to wake up early enough, don't have to work and aren't after a seat, you can make the Battle of Flowers parade on Friday affordable.
In addition to the VIA Park & Ride, metered parking is available near McCullough Avenue and St. Mary's Street for a few bucks if you're willing to walk.
It's free to walk around and watch the parade. You'll have to pay if you want a seat. Even then, bring your cooler, and you're $20 budget should keep you entertained — at least for an afternoon.
It isn't easy, but you can Fiesta without going broke.
