Richard Patrick is most commonly known as the lead singer of Filter, which tore through the mid-late 90s with its mix of industrial rock music. Dean and Robert DeLeo, meanwhile, are most commonly known as two members of one of the 90s most highly-regarded rock outfits – Stone Temple Pilots.
Together, along with drummer Ray Luzier, the rockers now comprise supergroup Army of Anyone. The group formed not long ago, and has only released one self-titled studio album.
So it made sense that many of the fans in attendance at Fiesta Oyster Bake on Saturday night at St. Mary’s University weren’t particularly familiar with Army of Anyone’s material.
That is, unless the quartet was reverting to some old favorites.
As Army of Anyone tore through original tracks like “Disappear” and “It Doesn’t Seem To Matter,” those in the crowd watched on with relative apathy. It wasn’t until the band pulled out a couple of hits from band’s past that the crowd began to respond.
As much was evident on the third song of Army of Anyone’s hour-long set, when the group ripped through a cover of former Stone Temple Pilots hit “Vasoline.” Later in the show, after playing some more original material, the band closed out their set – pre-encore, of course – with a rendition of Filter’s biggest hit – “Hey Man Nice Shot.”
After retreating to the back for a few short moments, Army of Anyone returned to the stage for a one-off encore with “Goodbye,” the popular radio track their debut release. It wasn’t exactly the highlight of the band’s 12-song effort (that would be reserved for anything pertaining to Filter or STP), but it was a good way to send the crowd home after a long, overcast day at Oyster Bake.
Of course, Army of Anyone was at somewhat of a disadvantage from the start.
When playing an outdoor event like Oyster Bake, complete with food and booze aplenty and a carnival to boot, a band must compete with the elements. Whether that’s bloated Oyster-eaters, drunken, tired boozehounds or a go-round on the Ferris Wheel, Army of Anyone – to many – wasn’t the event’s feature attraction on the final day of the Fiesta staple that is Oyster Bake.
That, obviously, would have been the aforementioned Oysters, booze and carnival festivities. And, of course, the oh-so-tasty funnel cakes. And really, how can anyone – even a quartet of famous rock stars – compete with a world-famous funnel cake?
