| EAT IT: La Tapatia serves up authentic Mexican |
|
|
With so many Mexican restaurants to choose from in San Antonio, it's not hard to find a place with really good, cheap Mex food. If you're cruising the Rigsby area, here's a place for you: Taqueria La Tapatia (there's also one on the South Side). Don't look for healthy options, though. This is straight up grease grub. And it's good sh**! WHAT: Taqueria La Tapatia; (210) 333-9885 WHERE: 3054 Rigsby Ave. There's also a South Side location at 538 Fair Ave. HOURS: 6 a.m.-11 p.m. seven days a week TASTE SENSATION: Everything we tried was good. The caldo de res was plentiful with res (many restaurants skimp on the meat and throw in extra carrots and potatoes instead). The carne asada tacos were perfection and were served with plenty of cilantro and onion, true Mex style. The enchiladas were equally good, and the beans were fresh and not overly salty. And the homemade corn tortillas were simply heavenly: light, fluffy and hot. TUMS-WORTHY: While the salsa was good, the chips were pretty stale and seemed like they came from a bag. A huge no-no for a restaurant purporting to be authentic Mex. But at least they didn't charge for 'em, like some places do! (Also a no-no!) And be prepared to wait if you arrive right at lunchtime during the week; other people have discovered this gem, too. THE 210 TAKE: Your standard tasty, inexpensive Mex restaurant. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area. They also serve breakfast until 11 a.m. (they'll only hit you up for $1.20 extra after that; not bad). And check this out: They have a to-go window so you never even have to get out of your car! Take that, McDonald's. Julie Ann Vera | 210SA |
