7 days: Event highlights for the week Print E-mail

Wednesday  | April 18

BOWLING FOR SOUP
Lowdown: Apparently, being intentionally cheesy is the hip thing these days. First, “American Idol” captures America's collective heart, and now, these guys have gained popularity from songs such as “High School Never Ends” and “1985.” For those of you unfamiliar with Bowling for Soup, “1985” tells the story of a soccer mom whose pop culture preferences never left, you guessed it, 1985. Man, that's downright poetic. Quietdrive opens.
When: 8 p.m.
Where: Jack's Patio Bar, 2950 Thousand Oaks Drive
How much: $15-$16
Info: frontgatetickets.com or bowlingforsoup.com

JAGERMEISTER MUSIC TOUR
Lowdown: If the punk/pop/comedy stylings of Bowling for Soup aren't your thing, maybe you'd be better off at this show, featuring Stone Sour (a.k.a. the Slipknot side project), Shadows Fall and Lacuna Coil. Even if you don't care for their hard charging tunes, you can always watch the crowd and shoot back Jager-bombs.
When: 7:30 p.m.
Where: Sunset Station, Lonestar Pavilion, 1174 E. Commerce
How much: $27
Info: sunset-station.com or ticketmaster.com

SOUTH PARK
Lowdown: “South Park,” in two ways, resembles a fine wine. First, both improve with age. And second, if you indulge too much in either, you'll probably end up spouting profanities for no reason. It's worth a mention because April 18 marks the show's 11th season finale.
When: 9 p.m.
Where: Comedy Central
Info: southparkstudios.com

Thursday  | April 19

JULIETA VENEGAS
Lowdown: Sultry singer-songwriter Venegas brings her rockin' sound to town. A contributor to the “Amores Perros” soundtrack, she's now promoting her latest CD, Limón y Sal. Expect to hear hits “Andar Conmigo” and “Lento.”
When: 8 p.m.
Where: Lila Cockrell Theater, 200 E. Market St.
How much: $50-$70
Info: ticketmaster.com

CHEVELLE
Lowdown: They performed in San Antonio a year ago as the opener for Nickelback. Now, it's Chevelle's turn to headline. Of course, anyone who ever had the misfortune of opening for Nickelback should, at the very least, be granted their own headlining tour at some point.
When: Doors open at 6 p.m.
Where: Sunset Station, Lonestar Pavilion, 1174 E. Commerce
How much: $17
Info: sunset-station.com or ticketmaster.com

OLD SETTLER'S MUSIC FESTIVAL
Lowdown: The Old Settler's Music Festival celebrates 20 years — and boasts the lineup to make it really feel like a celebration. Too many names to list here, but some of our picks are Joan Osborne, Sam Bush, Iris DeMent and Big Sandy & Los Straitjackets. Hard-core fans can camp. In keeping with hippie tradition, shaving is not required. Sadly, neither is showering.
When: April 18 through April 22
Where: Salt Lick BBQ Pavilion and Camp Ben McCulloch, Austin
How much: $15-$450
Info: oldsettlersmusicfest.org

Friday  | April 20

FIESTA

Lowdown: Just start partying.
When: Starts today
Where: Just about everywhere
Info: fiestasa.org

‘FRACTURE'
Lowdown: The previews make it seem like a psychological thriller, but in reality, it's Anthony Hopkins playing a less-subdued version of Hannibal Lecter. Honestly, Edward Norton could take the place of Ryan Gosling, Hopkins' “Fracture” co-star, and this would seem like nothing more than “Red Dragon 2.” And “Red Dragon 1” sucked, anyway.
When: Opens April 20
Where: See movie listings
Info: fracturemovie.com

‘DELIRIUM'
Lowdown: The folks at Cirque du Soleil have a touring show, and it's coming back to S.A. Driven by trippy music and wild stunts and acrobatics, “Delirium” offers a walk on the funky side. Plus, if you see a Cirque du Soleil show while it's in San Antonio, you won't have to take time away from the craps table next time you're in Vegas.
When: 8 p.m. April 20-21
Where: AT&T Center
How much: $39.50-$110
Info: attcenter.com/events

Saturday  | April 21

GOTHFEST
Lowdown: An art show, film screening, fashion show and performances by Brothers of The Flame and Comedia A Gogo. Live music by Lucid Dementia, PLiD and others. More importantly, it's a chance to pull those old Cure T-shirts out of the closet and layer on cheap black eyeliner. You'll look just like the lead singer of any emo or punk band under the age of 30.
When: 6 p.m.
Where: Sam's Burger Joint, 330 E. Grayson St.
How much: $8
Info: samsburgerjoint.com

JIMMY BUFFETT
Lowdown: Time to start wasting away again in Margaritaville. Don't know what that means? Think back to that night, long ago, when your dad came stumbling home after a few too many at the company luau. He was slurring the words to a song about flip-flops and margaritas. Who do you think sang that song in the first place?
When: 7:30 p.m.
Where: Minute Maid Park, Houston
How much: $36-$126
Info: margaritaville.com

FILM FESTIVAL DEADLINE
Lowdown: OK, all you Quentin Tarantino wannabes. Today's the last day to punctually submit your entry to the San Antonio Underground Film Festival. The festival, scheduled for June 22 and 23, showcases budding auteurs. Not voyeurs, man. Auteurs. Look it up.
How much: $35 to enter; after April 21 and through May 30, entry fees jump to $50
Info: safilm.com

Sunday | April 22

THE STREET DREAM TOUR
Lowdown: With T.I. busy making Chevrolet commercials with Dale Earnhardt Jr., Young Jeezy and Lil Wayne (pictured) might very well be the two best MCs going right now. And they're bringing some friends along for this show, including Fat Joe and Birdman.
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Freeman Coliseum
How much: $10.70-$65
Info: power1067fm.com

TITO PUENTE JR.
Lowdown: The son of the guy who first recorded “Oye Como Va” is in town (confusing, yes, but that's who he is). He's also had a few hits in his own right. Puente — the “Prince of Latin Dance” — will perform with the San Antonio Symphony.
When: 2 p.m. April 22; 8 p.m. April 20-21
Where: Majestic Theatre, 226 E. Houston St.
How much: $11.50-$61.50
Info: sasymphony.org

Monday | April 23

‘REAL WEDDING CRASHERS'
Lowdown: Just when you thought reality TV couldn't get any weirder ..... watch a bunch of D-list actors “crash” weddings and punk people. Ahhh, late-season reality TV. Oh, well, it beats wedding programming on E!.
When: 9 p.m.
Where: NBC
Info: nbc.com/The_Real_Wedding_Crashers

Tuesday | April 24

‘THE SEARCH FOR THE NEXT DOLL' FINALE
Lowdown: The search is over. In between catfights, one lucky girl becomes a Pussycat Girl on April 24. Free garter belts and singing lessons to the victor.
When: 8 p.m.
Where: The CW (where else?)
Info: cwtv.com/ shows/ pussycat-dolls

‘NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM'
Lowdown: Has Ben Stiller made a deal with the devil? Is there any other way to explain how “Night at the Museum,” “Meet the Fockers” and “Along Came Polly” all kicked ass at the box office?
When: Drops April 24
How much: $20-ish
Info: nightatthemuseum.com
