Transcendental meditation is a large part of Joey Fauerso's art. This is a detail of ‘Opening', a 2006 watercolor, oil and acrylic on paper.
Who: Joey Fauerso, 30

Medium: Painting, some installation and animation

Best known for: Portraits. “My interests in portraiture is in exploring the physical and psychological boundaries of the body and how that relates to nature and the environment,” she said. “A lot of my work is informed by Eastern philosophies that I was brought up with. My parents are really involved with transcendental meditation, and we grew up going to a meditation school,” which sparked an interest in “that idea of expansiveness inside us and the expansiveness around us and using the body as a conduit between the two.”

Factoid: Fauerso, who got her bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa and her graduate degree from the University of Wisconsin, is set to marry fellow artist Riley Robinson in May.

Paying the bills: She teaches art at San Antonio College.

Check her out: At Finesilver Gallery on Camaron Street or at finesilver.com or at web.mac.com/jfauerso/iWeb/joey. She also has shows up or about to open in Galveston, Arlington, Houston, New York and Los Angeles.
