It’s probably not a good idea to be hypnotized before entering the Ball of Steel.

Sylvia Fernandez wasn't sure how the public would respond to a motorcycle festival when she helped organize the first River City Bike Fest five years ago.

She was delighted to find out.

“We had it at Camargo Park,” she said. “And we ran out of room.”

The festival, slated for April 13-15 at Rosedale Park, has blossomed into a much-anticipated yearly staple. Last year, it drew about 17,000 people, and Fernandez, — now the event's CEO/treasurer, — said they expect attendance to exceed 20,000 this year.

In addition to motorcycle shows, Bike Fest features a hypnosis show and custom-built motorcycle displays. Saturday will also include a custom bike show, in which people can enter their motorcycles.

A family section has a mechanical bull and rock-climbing wall.

“There's really something for everyone,” Fernandez said.

That, of course, includes live music.

The event will showcase a number of local and national acts, including Powerman 5000, Crossfade and Black Stone Cherry.

Fernandez said the mainstream acts have given the Bike Fest exposure in surrounding areas such as the Rio Grande Valley. Because of that, she said about 2,000 people from outside San Antonio preregistered to attend.

“I think the very first year, we showed that it was a successful show,” Fernandez said. “We had good reception from the public and sponsors, and everyone embraced the show. We thought, ‘this is going to take off.'.”
Sure enough, it has.

Soundcheck

A handful of mainstream music acts will perform at the River City Bike Fest. Here are a few you might want to check out:

POWERMAN 5000
Sound: Industrial punk metal
Most notable for: The 1999 platinum-selling album Tonight the Stars Revolt!, which featured radio hits such as “When Worlds Collide” and “Nobody's Real.” That, and lead singer Spider One is Rob Zombie's  less-famous younger brother.

NIKKI MCKIBBIN
Sound: Pop rock
Most notable for: Placing third on the first season of the hit reality singing show “American Idol.” McKibbin has since beefed up her reality résumé with appearances on “Kill Reality” and “Battle of the Network Reality Stars.” No, we haven't heard of them, either.

CROSSFADE
Sound: Standard modern rock
Most notable for: The 2004 rock radio hit “Cold,” which told the tale of a guy who closes himself off from his significant other to mask his true feelings. The song is also biographical ..... for about 95 percent of men in committed relationships.

BLACK STONE CHERRY
Sound: Youth-infused Southern rock
Most notable for: Being really, really young. Of the four members of Black Stone Cherry, none are older than 23. Of course, 25 (a.k.a. old age) is fast approaching, so Ovaltine and 9 p.m. bedtimes aren't far away.
