OMG. Where to start? How about this: Not many people have much craving for a 37-inch, 15-pound pizza. But if ever you do, fear not: Big Lou's is there for you. That's right, 37 inches, 15 pounds — that's about as big as a 6-month-old kid — for under 40 bucks for a cheese. That's a bargain! But Big Lou's has far more to offer than a freakishly large pizza. The half order of spaghetti, with fabulous homemade sauce and meatball (one big one) will get you through lunch and dinner. The calzones are similarly huge and tasty. And the garlic cheese bread? A meal in themselves. There's also wings, salads, subs, lasagna and dessert (the cinnamon bread rocks). Still not enough? Throw in a full bar and TVs playing sports in every nook and cranny, and you've got yourself a big winner in Big Lou's.
WHAT: Big Lou's Pizza
WHERE: 2048 S.W.W. White Road; (210) 337-0707
HOURS: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday; Friday-Saturday 11.a.m.-midnight; Closed Mondays
TASTE SENSATION: You won't be disappointed with anything you order. From the cheese bread to the spaghetti to the pizza and calzones, this is the real deal. Dough and sauces are made on premises from scratch, and you easily can taste the difference.
TUMS-WORTHY: While there's no beef with the food, the wait is a bit of a bellyache. On the upside: Good, fresh stuff takes time to create, so it's worth it. On the downside: Make sure you have more than an hour to kill, especially if you're trying to run in for a bite at lunchtime.
THE 210 TAKE: Heaven on a pizza pan. And cheap, too (cheese lasagna, side salad and bread sticks $5.69, for example, or just under 20 bucks for a 16-inch, four-topping pizza). On your way into the joint, notice how many people are carrying out leftovers boxes. Nothing gets more perfect the next day than a perfect pizza.
