Some 10 years ago, Edo Bouman stumbled into a secondhand record store in Amsterdam and walked out several minutes later in love: His heart was dazzled by the fast tabla breaks, harps, vintage synthesizers and dreamy flutes featured on an album of Indian film music that he clutched in his hand.

Last year, the 38-year-old Dutch producer decided to compile and distribute some of his favorite tracks from his collection, which had grown to about a thousand records. It was an effort, he says, to fill in the gaps left behind by most of the Indian soundtrack compilations he'd come across. Most lacked information about the films and music. Others focused only on Bollywood's more well-known movies.

So in 2001, he traveled to India in search of original film posters and stills. He hunted down song booklets, which were sold at the cinemas and contained lyrics to the films' tracks. He also sought out session musicians and composers.

In this asap podcast, Bouman talks to asap's JAIME HOLGUIN about his research, which can seen and heard on the recently released Bombay Connection compilations of eclectic sounds from Bollywood's golden era.
